Troop 350 Committee Meeting Minutes, 05-10-10

In Attendance:  Dave Johnston, Bill Brower, David Fraser, David Hergenroeder, Martin and Brenda Bushey, John Trudell, Mary Anne Lovell, Jim Deming, Bill Hanson, and Russ Wetzel

Dave Johnston reports that the Jail Campout helped the County by discovering what works and what doesn't.  The scouts had a great time.

Two scouts will attend the NYLT (National Youth Leadership Training) on 30 May.

The Caving Camp Out may move to September.  It could be combined with the Climbing Campout. PLC will decide this week.

Jim Dearman will help scouts with requirements at the Oak Mountain campout if his weekend is open.  He needs to see if he has a schedule conflict.

John Trudell will get a locker to put in the storage room.  It will contain the merit badge books and Lost and Found.

Russ Wetzel thanked the Troop leaders for supporting his son as he progressed to the rank of Eagle.  Russ offers to meet with any boys and parents who might be interested in doing an Eagle ceremony for several boys at one time.  Currently most families use the "wedding model" but Russ suggests some may want to combine their ceremonies and use the Multi-Eagle Model.

Jim Deming states that the troop is short on lantern mantles.  Brian Pletcher also shared some equipment needs for consideration as follows:

1) New Troop Flag and pole:  The current troop flag is showing its wear.  We need a new troop flag for meetings and ceremonies, and the current troop flag can become the full-time campout flag.

2) Pop-Up canopies:  The troop has a need for cover for troop cooking areas.
- This is especially true when we are camping in areas with little tree cover to erect tarps with.  The food prep areas need to be covered from the elements.  The will also provide shade when we are in areas with few trees.

- I think the troop needs a minimum of 6 of these at about $100 per unit.  I have two "First-Up" units and have been very happy with their durability.

3) The chuck boxes could use an update.  We should buy a new set of nested camping pots and a camping utensil set for each chuck box to standardize content and get rid of the potpourri of current pots and utensils.  The cast iron skillets are still good.

4) Finally, when was the last time the troop trailer was taken in to a U-Haul for service?  I'm guessing its been a few years.  We need to do this to ensure the longevity of the unit.
